I successfully executed a two-story commercial building’s design project for my 3rd Semester using the City of Calgary’s development permit application as a blueprint, ensuring compliance with all requisite elements for approval. This meticulous approach culminated in an industry-ready grade of A+ for this phase of the project.

CD Phase Drawing Sets

In my 3rd Semester project focused on a two-story commercial building, I generated a partial CD set, emphasizing detailed explanations for construction in specific building areas. I meticulously outlined the three wall types specified in the project brief—Full bed masonry, curtain, and rainscreen with lightweight cladding. This effort resulted in an industry-ready A+ grade for the semester, contributing to a perfect final GPA of 4.0/4.0.

Drafting Section/Plan Details

In my Semester 3 project, I detected a significant thermal bridging concern at the wall/roof junction, prompting extensive research into viable solutions to uphold the thermal envelope’s integrity. Through this exploration, I came across Kalzip, a product that facilitated the preservation of the design’s intent and the establishment of an uninterrupted thermal plane, successfully resolving this pivotal aspect of my project.

During Semester 3 at SAIT, I took the initiative to tackle the curtain wall details, sharing my initial drawings for critique on our class Teams platform. In the subsequent session, my instructors conducted a thorough review, flagging numerous drafting errors, notably the crossing leaders, and highlighting areas for improvement. This process enabled me to recognize and rectify my drafting mistakes, fostering the development of high-quality, error-free details moving forward.

I meticulously adjusted the building design to align with the pertinent bylaws, securing an A+ industry-ready grade by ensuring full adherence to local regulations.

Part 3
In my Semester 3 project, determining fire separation and egress requirements for a multi-occupancy structure was pivotal. With four distinct occupancies within the building, extensive research was necessary to ensure optimal flexibility for the base building. Upon discovering that a mere 5mm thickness differentiated between 1-hour and 2-hour fire spray, I concluded that the slight additional cost for the added flexibility, especially for potential retail units on the second floor, was a worthwhile investment.

Barrier Free Design

In my 3rd semester project, our assignment involved crafting inclusive washrooms aligning with Alberta’s barrier-free design guidelines. I meticulously adjusted the design, ensuring that stall dimensions, turning radius, distances from walls, and fixture placements adhered to recommended specifications. Additionally, I carefully considered the heights of countertops, mirrors, and paper towel dispensers. The outcome was an efficiently designed, compliant washroom that met all the criteria outlined in the design guide.

Wood Frame Construction

In my first-semester project, I designed a single-family residential home with a stick frame construction method, incorporating traditional insulation and a sloped roof. Engineered TJI joists were employed for both the roof and floor structures. The successful implementation of these elements earned the project an A+ industry-ready grade.

For my second-semester project, I designed a two-story mixed-use building using a stick frame construction approach. I incorporated exterior insulation and utilized a combination of flat and sloped roofs. To ensure proper drainage on flat roofs, I implemented sloped insulation, achieving a minimum 2% slope. The outcome was a thorough drawing set that garnered an A+ industry-ready grade.

Non-Combustable Construction

In my third-semester project, I employed steel construction with a grade beam foundation for a two-story commercial building. I designed the steel structure with sloping roof members to ensure a consistent 2% slope toward the drains. Additionally, the incorporation of tall parapets necessitated the extension of steel beyond the roof into the parapet. The outcome was a sophisticated yet efficient structural plan, earning an A+ industry-ready grade.

BIM Software (Revit)

Across my second, third, and fourth semesters, I utilized Revit for my projects. Leveraging guidance from instructors, online resources such as YouTube and LinkedIn Learning, and collaborative efforts with peers, I crafted precise models. This approach significantly expedited the detailing phase by ensuring all major elements were accurately positioned and aligned from the outset, leading to considerable time savings.

During my third-semester project, I incorporated topography by importing an AutoCAD file from the City of Calgary into REVIT. This enabled precise placement of my building within the existing topography, facilitating strategic planning for property drainage and determining optimal slab heights for each commercial space.

Creating Revit Families

In my 3rd Semester project at SAIT, I developed Revit families specifically for Kalzip roofing products to resolve details concerning a sloped roof connection integrated with exterior insulation. Through meticulous analysis of documents and files obtained from Kalzip, I crafted detail families that precisely depicted the product’s installation, significantly enhancing the quality and accuracy of my project’s details.

Computer Aided Drafting (AutoCAD)

Utilizing AutoCAD, I designed a Martial Arts school in Trail, BC, tailored to the client’s specifications. By incorporating client feedback, I devised a floor plan optimizing the movement of individuals in and out of the training area, while also ensuring a dedicated pathway to the common washrooms. This layout fostered a safer environment, guiding users around the training floor to access the washrooms positioned at the rear of the building.

I successfully finished the AutoCAD certification preparation course offered by LinkedIn Learning. This training significantly streamlined my learning process, enabling me to navigate the learning curve more efficiently during my Semester 1 project at SAIT.

3D Modeling Software (SketchUp)

In my Semester 2 project, I discovered an optimal massing configuration for a narrow lot situated between two others. By leveraging SketchUp to analyze sunlight and shadows, I identified that a narrow building positioned along the North side of the lot would enable multiple South-facing windows for the residential units on the second floor. This strategic layout maximized sunlight exposure despite the lot’s constraints.

PDF Software (Bluebeam)

Redlining has emerged as a preferred activity in my architectural work, utilizing Bluebeam to scrutinize drawings and annotate potential issues. Through this proficiency, I’ve become a sought-after resource among classmates for feedback on their projects. Refining this skill has notably enhanced my ability to detect and rectify my own errors at earlier stages of my work.

Rendering Software (Lumion)

In my Semester 2 project, a part 9 mixed-use building in Calgary, Alberta, I employed Lumion for rendering purposes. This software allowed efficient exploration of various building material options. For my Semester 3 project involving a part 3 commercial building in Calgary, Alberta, I was introduced to Twin Motion. This software facilitated detailed exploration of interior finishes, exterior materials, landscaping, and lighting. The outcome comprised polished and professional renders that enhanced the presentation of my project.

Problem Solving

I encountered a thermal bridge issue involving a sloped roof where the roof deck supported the overhang section. To address this, I employed Kalzip, utilizing their standing seam roof and specialized clips to insulate the roof deck, effectively maintaining the thermal continuity.

Working Under Pressure

SAIT’s project-based learning exemplifies working effectively under pressure. Tasked with learning new building types on the go, the course structure includes three oral interim presentations and a final submission with strict deadlines. This pressure necessitated efficient task prioritization, ensuring completion of course requirements. As a result, I’ve developed the ability to stay focused and deliver under pressure, maintaining productivity even in demanding situations.

Mathematical Skills

I successfully completed technical mathematics and STATS for engineering at SAIT by employing various resources—utilizing a tutor, seeking guidance from my instructor, and collaborating with peers. Dedication to extensive practice sessions on problem-solving was pivotal in achieving an A+ grade, securing a 4.0/4.0 GPA for the course.

Interpeting Electrical, Architectural, Structural, and Civil Drawings.

While employed at C2 Properties, I encountered a sensor malfunction affecting the in-ramp heating system in our rooftop parking area. Leveraging my proficiency in interpreting drawings, I successfully located the specific documentation detailing the sensor’s type and placement on the ramp. With this information, the electrician swiftly replaced the faulty part, restoring seamless operation.

Microsoft Office

I created an Excel portal for C2 Properties shareholders, consolidating data from monthly reports to present expected versus actual figures. This tool facilitates swift financial assessments for clients, allowing them to easily gauge our buildings’ financial performance and alignment with projections.

Time Management

I assembled and cultivated a proficient team to manage and grow my martial arts enterprise. Emphasizing the critical importance of systems, I ensured clear communication and established defined expectations for all aspects of operations. I considered any ambiguity in roles or tasks as a personal leadership failure. This approach yielded an empowered team of 18 employees across two locations capable of operating independently for extended periods.

Teamwork

Collaborative teamwork formed the cornerstone of my martial arts business, overseeing more than 300 students across 50+ weekly classes. Our team fostered a weekly meeting structure to align objectives and utilized daily checklists for employees, concluding each shift with debrief sessions. This approach ensured everyone remained informed about school activities, fostering a culture of continuous improvement through daily collaboration among staff members striving for incremental growth.

Attention to Detail

I surpassed a personal record by breaking six bricks with an elbow strike in martial arts. Achieving this feat demanded an incredible level of detail; generating over 4200 psi, necessary to break the bricks, involves intricate body alignment, precise strike direction, controlled breathing to enhance muscle speed, and understanding rotational body mechanics. Mastering these elements translated into substantial striking power, enabling me to set a new personal record and attain a fourth-degree black belt in Tae Kwon-Do.

Working Under Pressure

Launching a martial arts school in a financially limited small town, I secured a small business loan from the Canadian Youth Business Foundation. This enabled me to commit to a five-year lease for a commercial space and begin operations. Remarkably, within the initial month, the school turned a profit, and by the end of the first year, I expanded the team by hiring the first full-time employee.

Communication (Oral)

Effective public speaking is integral to being a martial arts instructor. Weekly, I crafted motivational talks, termed “mat-chats,” aiming to inspire and motivate students within and beyond the Dojang (training hall). Drawing insights from numerous self-help books like Stephen Covey’s “7 Habits of Highly Effective People” and Don Miguel Ruiz’s “The Four Agreements,” I transformed these concepts into condensed lessons, seeking to enhance people’s lives through these discussions.

Establishing systematic approaches for consistent outcomes was a priority. I meticulously documented every facet of the business, crafting comprehensive manuals outlining tasks and associated expectations for employees. Utilizing Photoshop and Illustrator, I digitized, edited, and produced custom designs for a t-shirt business I operated for three years before divesting the equipment. Throughout this venture, I printed and sold thousands of shirts, hats, and hoodies, successfully generating a substantial profit.

Construction Administration

Within a 60-day timeframe, I orchestrated the design and execution of tenant improvements for a martial arts school in Trail, BC. This involved coordinating with contractors and the Trail, BC regional district to ensure compliance with building codes and local bylaws, while preserving the design’s original vision. The result was a client who transitioned into an improved space, featuring a thoughtful design that significantly enhanced the operational efficiency of their business.

Taking on a Variaety of Assgnments

As a self-employed individual managing multiple responsibilities, I adopt a strategic approach. I prioritize tasks by dedicating focused time intervals to each, emphasizing a one-task-at-a-time strategy. This method enhances my efficiency, enabling me to manage tasks effectively and minimize the need for switch-tasking.

Troubleshooting Construction/Production Problems

During the renovation of a martial arts school, it was overlooked by both the regional district and myself that the barrier-free washroom was slightly undersized by 1 square foot. This discrepancy came to light during the framing inspection. Swiftly, I adjusted the plan by relocating the partition wall between the bathrooms to ensure compliance. Consequently, the toilette flanges had to be relocated by 6 inches. Despite this adjustment, we achieved a conforming barrier-free washroom and successfully opened on schedule.

RAIC Syllabus Program

(2020-Present)

Hand Rendering

I manually rendered a project for the RAIC Syllabus program, focusing on a single-family residential design. Utilizing a drafting board, triangles, and a scale ruler, I explored massing and created floor plans, sections, and elevations. Successful completion of the course has motivated me to further refine and enhance my drawing skills.

As part of my application for the RAIC Syllabus program, I assembled a portfolio of hand-drawn pieces—a self-portrait, landscape, and a dog—all meticulously rendered in pencil. Refining these drawings involved multiple iterations until I achieved a level of work I found satisfactory. The quality of this portfolio contributed to my acceptance into the RAIC Syllabus program.

Sketching

In my initial two design studios, we were assigned to produce a weekly sketch for the first five weeks of each course. I selected various images or objects for recreation through sketching. This consistent practice noticeably elevated my skill level, showcasing significant improvement since I began honing this craft.

Physical Model Building

In RAIC 350, our assignment involved designing a single-family residential home. Opting for foam core poster board, I utilized it as a modeling medium to experiment with diverse forms and construction approaches. This approach led to the creation of a scale model that fulfilled the course requirements, effectively representing my building design.
